Flaunt does it all wrong.
Today i was in the PR office waiting around for a meeting and i picked up a copy of Flaunt Magazine. i want to like this magazine. i really do but every time that i pick it up i am reminded why i never buy it, usually forget about it and find myself wondering when Los Angeles will get it's shit together and produce a quality glossy. i know that working at i-D and around London fashionistas and style gurus has spoiled me somewhat. My stint in New York did not help either, but unlike the rest of the world, I do believe that Los Angeles has something to contribute to the world of art and fashion. Which is why, when i am reminded about Flaunt Magazine i get a little sad. Here... check out some of the covers...

i don't think that one has to be a fashion or photo snob to know that those covers are bad. very bad. This one is alright...

...if the rag in question was a college literary magazine.
The "content" also leaves something to be desired. There is a lot of borrowing from the layouts of i-D and Vice but without the grit or the edge that this magazine is so desperately trying to create and so badly copying. Los Angeles is not and will never be as gritty as NYC or as grey as London. It just won't. There is something else here that needs to be tapped into... something i cannot pinpoint...but i will think about and get back to you about... until then, go and see Marie Antoinette.
