nanbu senbei goma (a.k.a. the body of christ.)

i am a big fan of all things crunchy and all things Japanese. Imagine how happy i am when the two come together in the form of a cracker. If you have ever been to a japanese market, you will know that there is a wild assortment of crackers that not only look really cool (ahem, blow saltines out of the water...no tasteless war joke intended) but taste great. There are so many flavors to choose from- spicy, sweet, savoury... a blend of the three or in differing combinations... even the shapes and sizes are fun. Upon a recent trip to a huge Japanese market that is miles away, I stumbled upon the baked wheat craker as seen above...and i think it is my new favorite. Though it kind of tastes bland, there is something about the size, color, shape and speckle of black sesame seeds that make eating it a complete joy. I even dipped it into some hummus today and yes, it was good.
I also love the fact that this cracker looks like the communion host (er, the body of christ.) It is wonderfully sacreligious to eat this and think of that... especially as i was promised damnation and perdition, by the Sisters of Notre Dame, should i take the holy communion too many times in one day...and why would anyone want to take communion more than once a day you might wonder... and to this i respond... because i
actually liked the way that it tasted!
I remember being a youngster and thinking that i could trick the nuns and my family by saving the host in my pocket and savoring it later. One time my mother caught me with my little secret from the rearview mirror of the car and swerved the volvo into park, explaining vehemently, that i must never do this again. i am pretty sure that is not the first time that i made Jesus cry. sniff.
anyway... back to my crackers... the packaging leaves something to be desired.

i must go and meet rebecca...
nitey-nite...
